Adult Eye Exams Under Florida Medicaid: What You Can Expect
Once a member turns 21, the EPSDT umbrella closes and adult coverage rules apply. That does not mean you have no eye benefit — it means the benefit is organized around medical need.
What is generally covered for adults
Exams and treatment for eye disease: glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, infections, injuries, uveitis
Annual dilated exams for members with diabetes — an important and underused benefit
Medically necessary surgery, including cataract surgery, with prior authorization
Lenses following cataract surgery
Urgent and emergency eye care
What is limited
Routine refraction-only exams and standard eyeglasses for adults are limited under the base Florida Medicaid benefit. Many managed care plans, including Sunshine Health, add an adult eyewear allowance as an expanded benefit. These vary by plan year, so check what is currently active before assuming there is nothing.
If you have diabetes, use the benefit
A dilated exam once a year is the standard of care and it is covered. Diabetic retinopathy is asymptomatic until it is advanced, which is precisely why annual screening exists. Vision loss from diabetes is largely preventable with early detection and management; it is not preventable once the damage is done.
Symptoms that are medical, not routine
Sudden flashes, a shower of new floaters, or a curtain across the vision — urgent
Sudden vision loss in one eye — urgent
Eye pain with redness and light sensitivity
Double vision of new onset
Gradual loss of side vision
These are covered medical visits regardless of routine vision limitations. Do not delay because you think you have "used up" a vision benefit — different rules apply.
Practical advice
When you call, describe the symptom rather than asking for "a routine exam." How the visit is scheduled and coded follows the reason for the visit, and a medical reason is covered.
